Dr. Phillip Ardoin joined ASU in the Fall of 2003 and became the Director of the M.A. Program in Political Science in the Fall of 2005. His research interest address a broad array of issues within the field of American Politics. He is currently working on several research projects that range from an analysis of the various policy domains which drive individual political ideologies to an examination of the impact partisan bias in the U.S. Electoral College. He attended Marymount University in Arlington, VA for his BA and completed his MA degree and Ph.D. at Louisiana State University. Dr. James Barnes received his Ph.D from Ohio State University in 1970 and joined ASU in the Fall of 1996 after retiring from Ohio University. His research research and teaching interest focus on Western Europe and African Politics. Dr. Barnes was awarded in 2001 the Student Government Teacher of the Year Award for the School of Arts and Sciences. He served as Interim Department Chair for the 2006/07 Academic Year. Dr. Brian Ellison is the Chair of the Department of Government and Justice Studies. His published research and teaching in the MA Program focuses on environmental politics, federalism, and the administrative state. Dr. Ellison has taught public administration and American government as a Senior Fulbright Scholar at Sofia University in Bulgaria, and as a visiting professor at St. Petersburg State University in Russia and Liaoning Normal University in China. Dr. George Ehrhardt received his Ph.D from Indiana University in 2002 and joined ASU in 2005. Dr. Ehrhardt’s teaching interests include Research Methods, International Politics, and Asian Politics. Recently, he received a Fulbright-Hayes Research Grant to study members of the Soka Gakkai, a Buddhist sect that makes up the third largest political party in the Japanese Parliament. Todd Hartman received his BA from the University of California at Davis, his MA from San Francisco State University and his PhD from SUNY Stony Brook. Todd joined ASU in the Fall of 2008. His research focuses on several areas within political psychology, most notably political attitude formation and change, information processing, and intergroup relations. Dr. Andrew Koch received his Ph.D from the University of California at Santa Barbara. In 1995, Dr. Koch joined the ASU faculty. His main teaching interest is Political Philosophy. Dr. Koch is also the Advisor of the ASU chapter of the ACLU. Dr. Jesse Lutabingwa is the Vice Chancellor of International Programs. He received his Ph.D from Jackson State University. In 2003, Dr. Lutabingwa joined the ASU faculty. Dr. Adam Newmark received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2003 and joined the ASU in the Fall of 2004. He is currently Director of the Honors Programs in Political Science and Criminal Justice. He teaches a variety of courses in American government including American National Government and Politics, Political Parties and Interest Groups, Campaigns and Elections, and State and Local Government. Dr. Newmark also teaches graduate courses in these subject matters, including the Core Seminar in American Government. His research interests include interest groups and lobbying, state politics, public opinion, and public policy. Dr. Curtis Ryan specializes in International Relations and Comparative Politics, with particular interests in Middle East Politics, Islam & Politics, and International Terrorism. Dr. Ryan holds a Ph.D from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is also a Fulbright Scholar to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the author of Jordan in Transition: From Hussein to Abdullah and Inter-Arab Alliances: Regime Security and Jordanian Foreign Policy. Dr. Renee Scherlen started teaching at ASU in the fall of 1992. She teaches our Pro-Seminar in Comparative Politics as well as numerous undergraduate courses, such as US Foreign Policy, Globalization, and Latin American Politics. Dr. Scherlen’s research examines a broad array of issues within the field of Comparative Politics: she recently completed an article on the pattern of Mexican drug enforcement, as well as co-authoring (with fellow ASU faculty member Matt Robinson) a book on the US war on drugs (Lies, Damned Lies, and Drug War Statistics: A Critical Analysis of Claims Made by the Office of National Drug Control Policy). Currently, Dr. Scherlen is working on several research projects that range from an analysis of differing images of Cuba in the US and Mexico to a textbook on Latin American politics being co-written with a colleague from Mexico. She attended Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. for her bachelor’s degree and completed her MA degree (in Latin American Studies) and Ph.D. (in government) at The University of Texas, Austin. Dr. Joel Thompson earned his BS degree in Electrical Engineering from N.C. State University, the MA from ASU, and Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky in political science. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in research methods. He has published a number of books and articles on issues related to state and local government. His most referenced work is Campaign Finance in State Legislative Elections which he co-authored with Gary F. Moncrief He formerly served as Department Chair and Associate Dean of the Graduate School. He is the recipient of the University’s Distinguished Graduate Faculty Award and the Don W. Dr. Ike Udogu received his Ph.D from the University of Southern Illinois. Dr. Udogu’s teaching specialties include African Politics, Politics of the Developing Nations, and Human Rights. In 2005, Dr. Udogu was elected President-Elect of the Association of Third World Studies, Inc.
