Barbara H. Zaitzow attended the American Correctional
Association (ACA) meeting in Grapevine, Texas, (Jan. 12-15) where she
organized, moderated, and served as a speaker for the workshop
“Wrongful Convictions: Taking Action to Correct Injustice,” along with
other representatives of the Texas Innocence Project.
Zaitzow, who
serves as the faculty-advisor for the Appalachian Student Chapter of
the American Correctional Association (ASCACA), took three recent
Appalachian graduates - Angela Shook (criminal justice), Rachel Stanton
(psychology) and Jason Radford (philosophy and interdisciplinary
studies) - to the ACA meeting where they participated in a variety of
corrections-related events, including workshops, a prison tour, and
competing in the national Student Poster competition. Radford shared
his paper, “Gangs in Prison: An Institutional Approach,” and won first
place in the undergraduate competition. All of the student participants
were recognized at a special reception held in their honor. For further
