Barbara H. Zaitzow (ps/cj), faculty advisor for the
Appalachian Student Chapter of the American Correctional Association
(ASCACA), took two Appalachian students to the Louisiana State
Penitentiary – also known as “The Farm” - for a special tour that she
helped organize to bring students from Illinois, Louisiana and North
Carolina for the educational experience (April 19-21).
More recently,
Zaitzow and three Appalachian students attended the ACA meeting in
Kansas City, Mo., (Aug. 11-15) where they participated in a variety of
corrections-related events including workshops, business meetings,
prison tours, and the national Student Poster competition. Natalie
Freeman (criminal justice major), student-president of ASCACA, served
in an official capacity throughout the meeting and was a fine
representative of the university. Two Appalachian student papers were
among the 11 undergraduate papers accepted for presentation in the
national student poster competition. Zachary Mozingo (criminal justice
and psychology major) shared his paper “Intermediate Sanctions: The
Logical Solution to Prison Overcrowding, Effective Reentry, and
Reduction of Recidivism” and Rachel Stanton (psychology major) shared
her paper “Gendered Criminality: The College Experience.” Rachel
Stanton won first place in the undergraduate competition and all of the
student participants were recognized at a special reception in their
honor. For further information about the ASCACA and future activities,
